HONG KONG - Motoring enthusiasts from Hong Kong will mark the 20th anniversary of the city’s return to the motherland by taking 10 vintage cars on a road trip of more than 1,000 kilometers to tour the far-flung inland province of Yunnan.
The motorists hope to strengthen ties between the special administrative region and the mountainous province in the process.
The seven-day special celebration – jointly organized by the Yunnan provincial government and Xinhua Finance Agency – will set off on Nov 21.
The trip will start at Mengzi city in Yunnan’s Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture on Nov 21, and head north until they reach Kunming, Yunnan’s capital city. Multiple activities will be provided to engage local people. This includes a tour around its tourism sites and an exchange on food culture to boost the cultural understanding of the two places.
Deputy Governor of Yunnan province Zhang Zulin on Thursday said Yunnan had a rich diversity of topography, species, ethnicities and cultures. He also said about 30 percent of vegetables eaten in Hong Kong are imported from Yunnan.
He hopes the trip will deepen Hong Kong people’s understanding of Yunnan and provide a platform for business connection and cultural exchange between the two places.
The oldest among the 10 vintage cars is a Ford 1930 Model A made in the 1920s. Another rarely seen model will be a 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia SO-42. Other vehicles include a 1965 Mercedes 230SL, 1980 Rolls Royce Corniche, Series 1 Jaguar E-Type, Porsche 356 B and an MG TD from the 1960s.
Xinhua Finance Agency Chief Executive Ng Chong-fai said the event aims to give Hong Kong an opportunity to better understand Yunnan, elevate the international image of the province and extend the influence of Yunnan enterprises overseas.
