HONG KONG - Three workers at a roadworks site in Hung Hom died after water burst into a five-meter deep hole from broken pipes; poisonous gas hampered rescuers.

Power provider CLP was digging the 1.5-meter-wide hole for cabling work. According to the Fire Services Department (FSD), water was a meter deep inside the hole and rescue workers found hydrogen sulfide, a poisonous gas.

The gas hampered rescue work and it took two hours for a man who was still alive at the time to be pulled out. The worker was unconscious and later confirmed dead after being taken to hospital.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Law Chi-kwong extended deep condolence to the families of the three victims, vowing assistance from the government.

Kum Shing and the Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union offered HK$100,000 for emergency relief to help each family of the deceased workers.

According to official figures, the FSD sent 17 engines and six ambulances to the scene. More than 100 firefighters were deployed.

Hung Hom Fire Station commander Cheung Kwong-yuen said no external injuries were found on the men’s bodies. He said the three workers, aged 23 to 48, were not wearing safety harnesses at the time.
