KISHIWADA, Japan - People pull danjiri portable shrines in Kishiwada, Osaka Prefecture, on Saturday morning at the start of the city’s Kishiwada Danjiri festival.
Spectators cheered as participants hauled 34 portable shrines through the intersection in front of a train station and other locations, performing brave “yarimawashi” maneuvers in which they turned sharply while running at high speed. On Sunday morning, the danjiri will make shrine visits and at night they will be outfitted with chochin lanterns and again paraded through the streets. (The Japan News/ANN)
