30 local cases among Chinese mainland's 37 fresh infections

BEIJING/SHENYANG/SHANGHAI/URUMQI - Chinese health authorities said Thursday that they received reports of 37 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Wednesday, including 30 locally transmitted ones and seven imported cases.

Among the new local cases, 27 were reported in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region while the other three were posted in Liaoning province, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

The mainland posted 30 local cases, including 27 in Xinjiang and three in Liaoning, as well as five imported cases, of which five were reported in Shanghai and one case each was reported in Shandong and Shaanxi

All the new cases in Xinjiang were reported in the regional capital Urumqi while the fresh infection in Liaoning were posted in the coastal city of Dalian, according to the local health authorities.

Five of the seven new imported cases were reported in Shanghai, and one case each was reported in the provinces of Shandong and Shaanxi, the commission said.

The new cases in Shanghai involve five Chinese nationals who took the same flight from the United Arab Emirates on Aug 3 and arrived at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport the same day. They were put under quarantine upon arrival and were diagnosed as confirmed cases after showing symptoms, according to the health authorities in the municipality.

No deaths related to the disease or new suspected cases were reported, the commission said.  

Another 10 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery, the commission said, adding that there were 837 patients still being treated, including 34 in severe condition.

As of Wednesday, a total of 84,528 confirmed cases had been reported on the mainland, among whom 4,634 have died.

Altogether, 79,057 people had been cured and discharged from hospitals by Wednesday.

So far, the mainland has seen 2,110 imported cases, of which 2,008 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery while 102 remained hospitalized, with one in severe condition, the commission said. 

No deaths had been reported from imported cases, according to the commission.

There were still two suspected COVID-19 cases, it said.

According to the commission, 23,985 close contacts were still under medical observation after 474 were released from observation.

Twenty new asymptomatic cases, including 12 in Urumqi and seven from outside the mainland, were reported while one asymptomatic case was re-categorized as a confirmed one.

The commission said 282 asymptomatic cases, including 117 from outside the mainland, were still under medical observation.

By Wednesday, Xinjiang has reported 637 confirmed cases and 130 asymptomatic cases, and 17,301 people were still under medical observation.

Liaoning has posted 258 confirmed cases, including 34 imported ones, as well as two deaths and 161 recoveries. There were 24 asymptomatic people still under medical observation, according to the local health authorities.

Meanwhile, 3,754 confirmed cases, including 43 deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 46 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 476, including seven deaths, in Taiwan.

A total of 2,314 COVID-19 patients in the Hong Kong SAR, 46 in the Macao SAR, and 441 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
